I've been playing on a co-ed soccer team, and it has really been disastrous. I'm too old and too slow, and the passes and plays I make in my mind are always better than what my body ends up doing. I also pulled a quad in the first game and continue to re-injure it every game because my body just doesn't bounce back like it used to.
But anyway, I got to go to dinner with my cousin Mary Ann and her husband, Patrick, after our game on Wednesday, which was fun. So at dinner, Maile is chatting away, as usual, and she is telling Mary all about this cartoon.
Maile: ". . . and then this cat transforms--"
Kea: "Duh, Maile. Cats don't transform. They evolve."
I probably should have asked Kea what she thought cats evolved into. That might have been entertaining.
And then we had another game yesterday, Thursday, which was only one day after the previous game. The pulled quad didn't have nearly enough time to heal, so my poor team had to suffer with me even more than usual. After the game, we were walking to the car and Maile came running to me carrying a big stick.
Maile: "Hey Mom, would you like to know something totally awesome? It's really interesting."
Me: "I would love to hear about something really interesting."
Maile: "Okay, I'll tell you something really interesting, and I'll tell you something really interesting as we walk to the car because I have this stick, and I was thinking that I could attach a chain to it and swing it around so that I could kill wild animals."
Me: "Um, did you just say 'kill wild animals?'"
Maile: "I'm not talking about animals that live in the jungle. Duh, Mom. We don't live in the jungle."
Me: "Well, I know we don't live in a jungle, but what kind of animals are you talking about?"
Maile: "Just wild animals that might attack us."
Me: "Wild animals that might attack us at the soccer field?"
Then Maile rolled her eyes at me and walked away extremely frustrated. Apparently I was too dumb to realize the imminent danger we faced.

Ella Enchanted
Maile's new favorite movie is Ella Enchanted. As you might have guessed from the previous Stardust post, she is watching the movie because of the prince. She explained that she likes the prince in this movie because "he has a little bit of a mustache, and it makes me feel kind of funny inside." Did she just have her fifth birthday, or did she actually turn 25?
So I haven't blogged forever, but here is a quick re-cap on some of the events.
1) Maile is in primary class (church) and her teacher is sharing a lesson. And after the lesson Maile says, "Prove it."
2) We are at Kea's soccer game, and Maile lifts an oval rock up to my mom and says, "Nana, if you don't listen, I'll shoot you with pepper spray." Not sure how she even knows what pepper spray is.
3) We went to the Utah State fair last weekend, and Kea says, "This is my number one place. Number two would be Circus, Circus." So I say, "What about Disneyland? You like this place better than Disneyland?" And she says, "Yeah. This place has better ice cream." It's all about the food for the Maetani family.
4) Kea and Maile are playing with their cousins, Makai and Jonas, when Maile comes stomping in the house saying that Kea and Makai are so mean. So I ask what they did, and she folds are arms and says, "They used magic on us and turned us into snails! So now I can't move very fast. They're sooo mean!" I tell her just to ignore them and that she doesn't need to get that upset about something like that. But she still has her arms folded. And I tell her once again that she doesn't need to be angry about something like that. She tells me that she's not angry, but she is still huffing and puffing and has her arms folded. I say, "So why are you still acting like that then?" And she says, "I'm not angry anymore. I'm just folding my arms so that I don't poke my eyes out when I walk".....and I thought I was uncoordinated.
5) Both girls started school. Kea loves it of course. And Maile loves it too, but I asked her how her first day went, and she says, "Everything was fine, but I butted in front of this girl in the line." I ask her why she would do something like that, and she says, "It's because I needed to talk to her. She kept smiling at me, and she kept following me everywhere, so I butted in line and told her that it was bugging me." I say, "Maile, she was probably following you everywhere and smiling because she wants to be your friend." And Maile says, "Oh....I guess I'll be nice to her then."
6) My mom asked Maile who she plays with at school, and Maile says, "I have a friend named Berrett, and I played with another boy today....and he's a human."
If I get around to it, I'll post pictures from the first day of school....that's a really big "if" though.
